When to visit Japan
Cherry blossom peaks late March to early April in Tokyo and Kyoto, a week or two earlier in Kyushu and later in Hokkaido — book accommodation months ahead. Summer (June–August) is hot, humid, and includes the rainy season; September brings typhoons. Autumn foliage (mid-October to late November) rivals spring for beauty with far thinner crowds. Winter is excellent for skiing in Niseko and Hakuba and for Kyoto temples dusted with snow.

Google Maps directs you through Tokyo's rail network better than any local can — the walking directions inside major stations even tell you which train-car door to board for the fastest transfer. Cash is still king outside chain stores; carry ¥10,000 minimum. IC cards (Suica, Pasmo) can be added to Apple Wallet or Google Pay and work on every train, bus, and vending machine. Free public Wi-Fi is unreliable; a working eSIM makes translation apps, restaurant queue systems, and Uber Eats work reliably.

Do I really need an eSIM in Japan? Isn't there free Wi-Fi?
There's some free Wi-Fi in Starbucks, 7-Eleven, and larger stations — but it's spotty, requires re-login every 60 minutes, and doesn't cover the Shinkansen or most streets. If you're using Google Maps to navigate Tokyo or Kyoto, cellular data is transformative.
Which is better, DOCOMO or SoftBank?
Both are excellent in Japan's cities and along the tourist routes. DOCOMO has slightly deeper rural coverage; SoftBank is often faster in the busiest urban corridors. For a 1–3 week trip either is fine — the plan card shows which network you're getting.
Will the eSIM work on the Shinkansen and in the Tokyo Metro?
Yes on both. Every major Shinkansen line has continuous cellular reception including through the long Kanmon and Seikan tunnels. Tokyo Metro stations and tunnels have been fully covered since 2020.
How much data for a typical Japan trip?
For a two-week trip mixing Tokyo, Kyoto, and one other city: 5–10 GB is a comfortable target if you're mostly navigating with Maps and messaging home. Streaming (Netflix on the train, video calls with family) can double that fast — Japan's networks are quick enough that you can burn through data without noticing.
